Vila Sol Vilamoura Spa&Golf Resort has already been twice awarded the much sought after “Green Flag”, in recognition of its policy to protect and consolidate environmental richness and biodiversity.
When the resort was opened in 1991, there were around 45 representative bird species. There are currently around 61 classified species in the register that will soon complete 10 years.
According to the golf course’s architect, Donald Steel, “Vila Sol is living proof that dreams can come true. In the greenest part of the deepest Algarve, more than half of the 150 hectares of land were set aside for the construction of this beautiful 27 hole course…
The area contains many trees: stone pines, fig trees, almond trees and even a cork oak that has been producing cork for more than 300 years. Hundreds of trees have been preserved on the property…
Earth moving operations were kept to a minimum, the total amount being only one-quarter of the usual quantities used in the construction of a course of this kind and, even then, the focus of such operations was solely to highlight the landscape’s natural characteristics. Flowering shrubs, plants and flowers border on the undulating fairways.“

This is the context that has led to the creation of conditions that permit some species of birds to reproduce here, such as the purple gallinule and mute swan. Many other birds also choose the Resort as a stop-off point during their migration or as a place to over-winter.
The weather conditions and Vila Sol’s location provide cover from narrow-leaved plants, resistant to drought conditions and possessing high environmental value. The golf course is home to more than 60 plant species, mostly from the Mediterranean region, which supports the rich bird fauna.
At Vila Sol Vilamoura Spa&Golf Resort, the compliance with strict building regulations is essential to ensuring that forthcoming property holders may find a pure and diverse natural environment, abounding with birds, butterflies, hedgehogs, moles, hares, wild rabbits, field mice, ocellated lizard, tortoises or terrapins.
The implementation of the Quality and Environmental Management System according to the ISO 9001:2000 (Quality) and ISO 14001:2004 (Environmental) standards is deemed strategic to the property development and, as such, has been a core focus since the resort’s creation. This concern will assist in improving the unique environmental and life quality that we increasingly want to foster and share.
